Shinkai spends an hour on a body-swap comedy, phones and diaries and mortified teenagers writing rules on each other's arms, and the lightness is a setup. The reveal that Mitsuha and Taki are not living in the same year converts the film into a rescue, and the moment Taki finds the town on a map is genuinely staggering. The backgrounds are the reason this one traveled: Shinkai renders lens flare, wet asphalt, cloud edges and the Tokyo skyline with a density that makes photorealism feel emotional rather than showy, and the twilight sequence on the crater rim is the best looking scene in modern anime.
Radwimps score it like a rock album, with vocal tracks driving montages that would otherwise sag, and Masayoshi Tanaka's character designs keep the faces expressive against all that detail. What we grade down is the last act, which stacks near misses and memory-loss reversals until the emotional logic starts running on coincidence, and the braided cord metaphor gets explained more than once. The craft carries it anyway.
