Rachel McAdams is ferocious as a doormat turned predator, but Sam Raimi's island thriller gives her more twists and gore than story.

Columbia first wanted this as a streaming release, and Sam Raimi held out for cinemas. It plays like a director let off the leash: his first R-rated film since The Gift, with a cheeky Danny Elfman score, Bill Pope's restless camera and gore that is as funny as it is gross. Damian Shannon and Mark Swift's script flips the office pecking order. At work, Linda (Rachel McAdams) is a punchline, and on the flight out the man who got her promotion plays her old Survivor audition tape for laughs; on the island she catches fish, kills a wild boar and makes Bradley (Dylan O'Brien), the heir who handed that promotion to a fraternity brother, ask for everything.

McAdams carries the film, shifting from mousy to menacing so smoothly that the audience keeps switching sides without noticing. O'Brien's entitled sniveling is precisely judged, pathetic enough to enjoy and sympathetic just often enough to keep the power struggle open, though the script gives their sparring fewer sharp lines than its premise promises.

The last act stacks up more twists than the story can hold, and its lurch into full-bore violence breaks the tone the first hour sets so carefully, trading the satire for splatter. McAdams makes it worth a look; the film around her is a middling one. It opened at number one for 20th Century Studios at the end of January 2026 and became one of the most streamed films of the spring.
