The film's original sin is that it is not about Selina Kyle at all. Patience Phillips is a timid graphic designer murdered by a cosmetics company and resurrected by an Egyptian cat, which strips out everything that makes the character work, the thief, the moral ambiguity, the relationship to Gotham, and replaces it with a revenge plot about face cream that hardens skin. Halle Berry commits fully and is badly served; the costume was mocked on sight, and the film asks her to hiss, eat tuna from a tin and play basketball as characterisation.

Pitof came from visual effects and directs like it, cutting the action into so many fragments that no stunt reads, with a computer generated Catwoman leaping between rooftops in shots that looked artificial on release and look worse now. Sharon Stone's villain is at least having fun. Berry collected her Razzie in person with her Academy Award in hand, which remains the single classiest thing anyone connected to this production ever did.
