Vinland Saga Review
2005Manga
A revenge saga that talks its own protagonist out of revenge, then has to find out what is left.

The first arc is a straight revenge story executed at a very high level: Thorfinn's duels with Askeladd are drawn with brutal clarity, and Askeladd himself is the best-written character in the series, a cynic whose single sincere loyalty is the thing that kills him. Then Yukimura throws the plot away. The farmland arc strands Thorfinn as a slave clearing stumps, removes fighting from the book almost entirely, and asks whether a man built for nothing but killing can be rebuilt.
It is a swerve that lost readers, and it is exactly why the series matters. Canute's arc runs in parallel and is nearly as good, a boy who becomes a king by deciding that love is something you administer rather than something you feel. The historical grounding is careful without being fussy about it. The later voyages sag, and the pacifism is argued more than dramatised in places. Very little else in the medium has the nerve to defeat its own premise this deliberately, or the craft to survive doing it.
