Hunter x Hunter Review
1998Manga
A shonen manga written like a rules lawyer's notebook, and the hiatuses are the price of that.

Togashi treats power as contract law. Nen abilities carry stated conditions, declared restrictions and penalties for breaking them, so fights are argued rather than escalated, and a character can lose because he agreed to a bad clause months earlier. Chimera Ant is where this pays out completely: hundreds of pages of troop dispositions, a king learning a board game, and a climax that turns on somebody's willingness to spend his own life as currency.
Yorknew is a heist with almost no combat in it at all. The Succession Contest arc goes further and becomes a political thriller with a cast list you genuinely need to keep notes on, which is either the peak of the series or the point at which it stopped being a shonen manga. The art swings wildly with Togashi's health, from immaculate to rough pencils printed as they were drawn, and the hiatuses have now consumed more calendar than the publication has. Nothing else in the genre is written with this much respect for the reader's attention or this little for their patience.
