Haikyu!! Review
2012Manga
The best sports manga of its century, because it cares as much about the losing side as the winning one.

Furudate does two things better than any sports manga of the last twenty years. The first is technical. Volleyball runs on rotations, angles and split second reads, and the paneling makes all of it legible, so a reader who has never watched a match understands why a blocker commits early and why that choice costs a point. The second is the writing around the net. Every opponent gets an interior life, a reason to be on the court and a proper goodbye, which means the losses land as hard as the wins and the tournament structure never reads as a queue of obstacles to clear.
Hinata and Kageyama are a fine engine, but the series belongs to its enormous supporting cast, and the rival schools are as carefully built as the home team. The criticisms are modest and mostly about scale. The tournament middle runs long, a few of the later rival schools blur together, and the ending that jumps forward in time pleases fewer readers than the matches do. As a portrait of a team sport, nothing in the genre is sharper.
