Noda's adventure works on three levels at once and never drops one. As a chase it is fast and brutal, with a treasure map tattooed across the skins of escaped convicts and three factions racing to assemble it. As ethnography it is exceptional. The Ainu material is researched with a seriousness the medium had never applied to it, from hunting and skinning to language, cooking and belief, and Asirpa is a fully realized person rather than a cultural exhibit.
As comedy it is deranged, because Noda will interrupt a knife fight with a hot spring gag or a lecture on eating squirrel brains. That tonal whiplash is the one thing critics argue over, and the back half leans harder on the jokes than the tension can always carry. The final volumes resolve the hunt cleanly without matching the middle. It took the Manga Taisho and then the Tezuka Osamu Cultural Prize grand award, and the reason sits on every page, because nobody else is building a period adventure this dense.
