2020Manga
The fantasy manga that begins where every other one ends, and finds more there than they found on the way.

Frieren starts at the moment a conventional fantasy would roll credits, with the hero's party returning home, and asks what a near immortal member of that party does with the decades after. The answer is that she goes back, slowly, with new companions, and understands for the first time the people she travelled with. That structure lets the manga do something rare: it is a road story, a quiet comedy, a meditation on time and grief, and, when it wants to be, an excellent action series with a magic system that rewards thought.
Abe's art is clean and expressive and the landscapes are beautiful. The characters are the achievement, with Frieren's slow thaw and Fern and Stark's growing partnership handled with restraint. The mage examination arc is the best sustained stretch of shonen in years. It is a series about what it means to have known someone, and it earns its grade without a single cheap moment.
