Chainsaw Man Review
2018Manga
Film literate, deliberately tasteless, and the only recent hit that treats its hero's stupidity as the point.

Fujimoto cuts like an editor. Panels drop the connecting beat, a fight ends between pages, a joke lands one panel after a decapitation, and the reader is left assembling the missing frames, which is why the pacing feels faster than the page count suggests. Denji is the reason it works. Almost every protagonist in the genre wants to protect someone or become the strongest, and this one wants toast with jam, so every attempt to recruit him into a cause reads as exploitation, and the book knows it.
Makima is the best written antagonist the magazine has produced in years, a control fantasy who never raises her voice. The devil premise gives the fights unusual rules, since a devil's power scales with how frightened people are of the thing it embodies. World building is where it is loosest, because the public safety bureaucracy and the international devil hunters are sketched rather than built, and the timeline contradicts itself. Part two moved to a different magazine, ran cooler and more diffuse, and its 2026 finale left a large amount deliberately unresolved. The invention rate stayed extraordinary throughout.
