Tite Kubo is one of the finest page designers the magazine ever had and one of its least reliable plotters.

Kubo composes rather than illustrates. He will give a full page to a figure standing in white space with a single sound effect set in display type, and it works, because the restraint makes the crowded pages hit harder and because his character silhouettes are distinct enough to be recognised as shapes alone. The costume and weapon design is the best in its generation and a large part of why the cast stayed beloved through material that did not deserve them.

The Soul Society arc is genuinely strong, a rescue with a real conspiracy under it and a captain roster deep enough to sustain a dozen parallel fights. After that the structure fails repeatedly. The Arrancar arc escalates by adding tiers of stronger opponents with no reason to care about any of them, subplots are opened and abandoned by the volume, and the final war is compressed so severely that named antagonists are defeated off page and several threads simply stop. Reader scores sit far below its enormous popularity, and the gap is entirely structural. The design work is what endures.
