Uplands Golf & Ski Club Review
Nine surviving holes of a great Thompson course, kept alive but not kept up.

Uplands is a ghost story you can play. Stanley Thompson laid out a full course here in 1922, housing took the rest, and nine holes survive on the ravine land above the Don headwaters in Thornhill. The bones are visibly his; the holes that dive across the ravine, with tilted fairways and greens benched into the far slope, carry more architectural interest per acre than most modern GTA courses manage in eighteen. On those three or four holes you understand exactly what was lost.
The rest of the experience does not hold up its end. Conditioning has been an afterthought for years, with thin lies, patchy greens and bunkers halfway back to nature, and the green fee is pitched as if the Thompson name alone completes the maintenance. The ski operation keeps the property alive in winter and clearly gets the capital. Play it once, as archaeology, and stand on the ravine tees a moment longer than the group behind would like. As a regular game, the grade is the review.
