Real Club Valderrama Review
The best conditioned course in Europe wrapped around an architecture nobody has ever agreed about.

Jaime Ortiz-Patiño bought a Robert Trent Jones course called Las Aves in 1984, had Jones rebuild it, and then spent twenty years spending whatever it took to make the result perfect. He succeeded at that part completely. Valderrama is the most immaculately presented course in Europe and arguably in the game, with greens that run true at speeds most clubs cannot hold for a week let alone a season, and cork oaks standing in the middle of fairways that were there long before the golf was.
The fourth, La Cascada, climbs to a two tier green with water beside it and is the hole everybody remembers fondly. The seventeenth is the other sort of famous. Ballesteros remodelled it and put a lake across the front of a green that sheds anything landing short straight back into the water, Tiger Woods lost several balls that way in 1999, and professionals have been asking for it to be rebuilt ever since.
That hole is the whole argument in miniature. This is target golf on a narrow, tree lined, relentlessly penal course that rewards accuracy and very little else, and the ground game that makes the great courses great simply does not exist here. It is a fine championship test and a limited piece of design. At 518 euros in 2026, plus a compulsory forecaddie, on a course that takes visitors Monday to Thursday only, you are paying a Pebble Beach price for a very good members' course.
