Newcastle Golf Course Review
A full-length eighteen whose yardage writes cheques the course itself has stopped cashing.

Newcastle has the raw material of a real course, which is what makes the round frustrating rather than merely modest. At 6,388 yards and par 70 it is one of the longer public tickets in this part of Durham, and a handful of holes on the higher ground, where the fairways tumble toward long views of Lake Ontario, hint at what a thoughtful renovation could unlock. The rest of the card does not follow through. Too many holes are straight, flat and interchangeable, bunkering is scarce and shapeless, and the greens are mild to the point of anonymity; you finish the front nine unable to describe three holes on it.
Conditioning compounds it. Our recent rounds found patchy fairway lies, slow bumpy greens and tee decks overdue for leveling, and at a green fee touching fifty dollars those problems stop being charming. There are worse courses in the region, but few where the gap between what the land offers and what the golfer receives is this visible. Until the upkeep turns around, the grade stays down.
