Eighteen par 3s in the Maple countryside: a fine wedge rehearsal and a limited idea of golf.

Kirby Links does one thing and does it tidily. Eighteen par 3s roll across sixty-one acres of open countryside off Kirby Road, averaging around 148 yards, and the round is a sustained interrogation of your iron distances; nothing else is examined because nothing else is asked. Within the format there is some craft. The green complexes are the trickiest part of the property, with enough tilt and shaved surround to make a missed green cost real strokes, and the land's gentle roll varies the shots more than a flat par-3 track would.

Unbroken sightlines across farmland, with no subdivisions crowding the fences, make it a more pleasant walk than most short courses this close to Vaughan. But an honest grade has to price the ceiling. There are no decisions here, no tee shot that asks for thought rather than a number, and by the twelfth hole the exercise repeats itself. As practice with a scorecard, or a first full round for a junior, it earns its modest fee. As golf, the letter is the letter.
