Xenoblade Chronicles 3 Review

2022Monolith SoftGame

A war between two nations where every soldier lives ten years and the reward for killing is more time, which is the bleakest premise Nintendo has published.

The premise does most of the heavy lifting and it is a good one. Soldiers on both sides are grown in tanks, live ten years, and extend their lives by taking the life force of the people they kill, so an entire civilisation has been engineered to find war meaningful. Watching six of them work out what a grandparent is, or what happens after ten years if nobody stops you, gives the long runtime somewhere to go. The class system is the mechanical high point, with every party member able to learn any of two dozen roles and carry skills across them, and the interlinking mechanic that fuses pairs into a single unit changes fights rather than just adding damage.

Environments are vast and the exploration payoff is real. The costs are familiar for the series: the technical presentation is soft and blurry in handheld mode, the tutorial dump in the first ten hours is relentless, and the menu design assumes you enjoy submenus. Pacing sags badly around chapter five.
