Heroes, creeps and a map editor generous enough that its users invented two entire genres inside it.

Two design additions changed the genre permanently. Hero units that gain levels, carry items and persist across a campaign gave every battle a protagonist, and neutral creeps scattered across the map turned the early game from an economic race into a series of decisions about risk. Together they compressed a forty minute match into something with a narrative arc, and every strategy game since has borrowed from that template. The campaign is the other half of the achievement.
Arthas walking from paladin to Lich King across two acts is a genuinely tragic arc, the orc chapters rehabilitate a race that had been cartoon villains for eight years, and the mission scripting never settles into a rut. Then there is the world editor, which was powerful enough that players built a hero defence mod inside it that became the biggest competitive game in the world, and a tower defence scene that never left. The unit upkeep system throttles army sizes in a way some players never forgave, and the four race balance took years of patches to settle.
