Warcraft III: Reforged (2020 Remaster) Review
2020Blizzard EntertainmentGame
A remaster that deleted the game it was remastering, took the rights to what players made in it, and shipped without half of what was demonstrated.

The unusual thing about this failure is that it did not merely disappoint, it removed something. Reforged overwrote the original client, so players who wanted the 2002 game they already owned no longer had it, and the version they got had a smaller feature set. The reworked campaign cutscenes and altered camera angles shown at the announcement were quietly dropped. Ladder rankings, clans, custom campaign support and profiles were missing at launch.
The new models sit awkwardly against unchanged terrain and interface art, so the upgrade reads as inconsistent rather than modern. Worst of all, the terms attached to the world editor claimed ownership of custom content, which is a remarkable thing to assert about the editor whose community invented an entire genre. Blizzard offered refunds without conditions, which is an admission. Underneath it the 2002 design is still one of the finest strategy games ever made, and that is precisely why this is unforgivable rather than merely bad.
