Wildlands with a gear score bolted onto it, and a shooter that spends the next year apologizing.

Auroa is not the problem. The island chain is among the better looking places Ubisoft has built, with convincing weather, a survival layer of injuries and stamina, and a prone camouflage system that gestures at the tense special forces game this was meant to be. Jon Bernthal shows up as a serviceable antagonist. Everything wrapped around that is where it comes apart.
A looter shooter economy was grafted onto a Tom Clancy title, so enemies carry item levels, a rare helmet is worth a rounding error in protection, and the progression exists mainly to walk you past a store. Critics went hard at the sheer volume of microtransactions, and players went considerably harder. Mission design is thinner than Wildlands, the computer controlled squadmates were absent at launch, and the writing loses track of who the Ghosts are supposed to be.
What complicates the verdict is the repair job. The Ghost Experience update in 2020 let you turn off the loot tiers, the regenerating health, and most of the interface, and what was underneath is a decent tactical shooter a patient co-op group can enjoy. That fix is real. It does not undo a launch this badly judged, and the grade sits where the shipped game put it.
