The Witcher Review
2007CD Projekt RedGame
A clumsy debut with a rhythm-based combat system nobody liked and a moral framework nobody else was attempting.

The combat is the thing everyone remembers and the least interesting part. You pick a stance, then click when a flaming cursor appears, which is a rhythm minigame stapled to an isometric role-playing engine and it never stops feeling like homework. Everything else is why this studio exists. The world is grubby, prejudiced and politically specific, with a nonhuman underclass and a witch hunting order that are both genuinely awful in ways the plot refuses to simplify.
Choices are the real innovation, since the game deliberately withholds consequences for entire chapters, so a decision you made about a mob outside a hospital returns much later wearing a different face. Geralt is written as a working professional rather than a hero, and the source novels give the script a density most adaptations lose. The production shows its budget everywhere, with recycled character models, a translation that is stiff in the original release and load times that were rough even then. The enhanced edition fixed a great deal. Play it for the writing and the world, and make peace with the swordplay.
