Subnautica Review

A survival game with no combat worth speaking of, which is exactly why swimming into the dark is genuinely frightening.

Almost every survival game answers danger with a better gun. This one gives you a knife you barely want to use and makes the entire progression about pressure depth: better tanks, better vehicles, better hulls, each unlocking a band of ocean darker and less forgiving than the last. That single design choice produces the best fear response in the genre, because a leviathan roaring somewhere off screen at four hundred metres is a problem you cannot solve by shooting it.
The biomes are distinct and lit with real care, the base building is intuitive without being trivial, and the story delivered through wrecked ships and radio messages resolves into something surprisingly warm. It has a lot of rough edges. Performance stutters when a base grows large, terrain pops in front of a fast Seamoth, and inventory management across lockers is tedious past the twenty hour mark. The final act also swaps exploration for a sequence of fetch objectives that the rest of the game had been elegantly avoiding.
