A thousand planets and not one of them is a place you would choose to walk across.

The failure is structural. Bethesda's strength has always been the walk, the hand-placed detour you find between two objectives, and this design makes walking impossible. Planets are procedural tiles reached through fast travel, so the space between locations contains nothing worth crossing, and a game about exploration ends up being played almost entirely through menus and loading screens. What survives is real.

Ship building is a deep, fiddly, genuinely rewarding system, and the interior layouts you assemble actually matter in combat. The Crimson Fleet and Ryujin questlines are among the better faction stories the studio has written, and Vasco is a good companion. Gunplay is the best Bethesda has managed, though that is a low bar cleared rather than a high one met. The New Game Plus conceit is clever in principle and repetitive in practice. A studio applied its established formula at a scale that removes the very thing the formula depended on.
