One person spent four years rebuilding Harvest Moon better than the studio that invented Harvest Moon.

Eric Barone taught himself art and audio while making Stardew Valley, redrawing the same sprites for four years, and the result has no visible seams between its systems. The farm is the engine but the town is why people stay: thirty villagers on real schedules, each carrying a private disappointment the game reveals only to someone who keeps showing up. Its opening move is a grandfather's letter and a corporate cubicle, and the whole design is an argument for leaving, which landed harder in 2016 than anyone predicted.
Days end short enough that you always finish one owing yourself something, which is the loop that eats weekends, and the spread of activities means a player who dislikes farming can fish, mine, forage or spend a full year restoring the community centre instead. Combat is the weak link, a shallow dungeon crawl bolted onto a much better game, and the late economy tips over the moment ancient fruit and kegs arrive. Barone has patched and expanded it free of charge for a decade since, which is most of the reason it never left the sales charts.
