Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic Review
2003BioWareGame
The best story the license has ever been handed, bolted to combat that is rolling dice behind a curtain.

Set the story four thousand years before the films and Star Wars becomes a setting again rather than a continuity problem. BioWare uses that freedom to build a party of genuine characters, hand you a light and dark axis that changes who is willing to travel with you, and then land a third-act reveal that reframes every conversation you have already had. It is still the sharpest twist the license has produced.
The combat has aged less kindly. It is a tabletop rules engine wearing a real-time costume, so most fights resolve into pausing, queueing three attacks, and watching dice you cannot see decide the outcome, and encounter density on Taris and the Star Forge turns that into busywork. The visuals were dated on arrival, with stiff faces, flat corridors, and a frame rate that struggles on original Xbox hardware. None of it dents Malak, Bastila, or the writing that keeps people replaying this.
