The same sixteen fights rebuilt surface by surface, by a studio that understood it was not allowed to change them.

A remake is usually an excuse to fix things, and the discipline here is that Bluepoint fixed almost nothing that mattered. The geometry of the sixteen fights, the grip timing, the way Agro drifts wide on a turn: it survives down to the frame, because the original awkwardness was load bearing rather than accidental. What changed is everything you look at. Fur catches light and moves in wind, the forbidden lands have real haze and a sun that sits somewhere, and the colossi read as stone and moss and muscle instead of the smeared textures a PlayStation 2 could afford.

The frame rate finally holds, which matters more than it sounds, since the old dips arrived exactly when a colossus stood up and you most needed to see. The purist complaint is fair and worth stating plainly. The new lighting is warmer and prettier than Ueda's sickly palette, and a little of the dread left with it, while Wander's recut face still bothers people who loved the old one. Everything the game is actually about came through untouched.
