Resident Evil (2002 Remake) Review

The rare remake that beats the original at its own game and then quietly keeps going.

Most remakes translate. This one argues. The pre-rendered backgrounds are the finest fixed-camera art anyone has produced, layered with subtle animation in the rain and the candle flames so the stills breathe, and twenty years on they still humiliate real-time lighting. The design changes are sharper than the paint. Crimson Heads mean a corpse you left in a hallway can come back faster and angrier, which weaponizes the player's habit of clearing rooms and hoarding fuel for the burning.
Defensive items turn a grab from a death sentence into a decision. Lisa Trevor is the best addition, an unkillable tragedy who converts the mansion's safest stretches into open ground. It is still a tank-control game with a save ribbon economy, and the new backstory is more explanatory than the vagueness it replaced. It sold poorly enough on GameCube to help push the series toward action, which is its own small tragedy. The remastered rerelease finally gave it the audience it always deserved.
