The remake that threw out every mechanic that made the original frightening, and found the fear again.

Capcom discarded the fixed cameras, the pre-rendered backgrounds and the tank controls, which should have removed the dread along with the friction, and then located the dread somewhere else entirely. The RE Engine's lighting turns the Raccoon City Police Department into a building you navigate by torchlight and memory, and the wet, deforming zombie models make ammunition into a currency you are always spending badly: a body that will not stay down is a live question about whether to keep firing or run.

Mr. X is the design's masterstroke, an unkillable pursuer whose footsteps carry through floors and turn the map's carefully learned shortcut network into a moving hazard, and he is the reason a save room reads as relief rather than routine. Leon and Claire share a building without sharing an experience. The story is B-movie pulp delivered with a straight face, and the second-run scenarios are thinner than the 1998 zapping system they replace, which is where the grade gives ground. But walking back into the parking garage with a locked door behind you is as good as survival horror has been this century.
