Two hours, one mechanic, nineteen rooms, and not a wasted second in any of them.

Two hours long, built by a handful of students Valve hired off a school project, and it still teaches design better than games three times its size. The whole thing is one mechanic explained across nineteen rooms in strict order, and the escalation from a portal on a wall you can see to conservation of momentum through a hole in the floor is textbook pacing without a word of tutorial text.

The test chamber aesthetic is deliberately sterile, which is why breaking out through a maintenance corridor into the machinery behind it lands so hard. GLaDOS is the best written antagonist Valve has produced, a voice that degrades from customer service into open malice over the runtime, and the companion cube gag works because the game commits to it mechanically before it commits to it emotionally. The one real criticism is length, and even that is part of why nothing here is wasted.
