NHL 14 is the roster-update accusation made mostly true, rescued by two good ideas. The Enforcer Engine ported FIFA's player impact physics into open-ice hits and one-button fighting that finally looked like hockey scraps instead of puppet shows, and the NHL 94 Anniversary mode, blue ice, star cursors, simplified controls, was a genuinely charming birthday card to the series' best-loved ancestor. One-touch dekes made skill moves accessible without erasing the stick-skill ceiling.
But underneath, this is NHL 13 with the sliders nudged: same True Performance Skating, same presentation package, same modes with new menus, and Live the Life's career flavor choices, interviews nudging likability ratings, are exactly the thin narrative wrapper the D in story describes. As the last hurrah before the new console generation forced a rebuild, it is comfortable, competent, and creatively idle. The C for difficulty-to-make reflects how much was inherited rather than made.
