NBA 2K25 Review

2024Visual ConceptsGame

The dribbling and shot contests finally feel like basketball again; the progression economy still feels like a mobile game.

The floor game took a real step. The dribble engine was rebuilt around a shot contest system that reads defender proximity, closeout angle and hand position rather than a blunt cone, so contested jumpers miss for legible reasons and open ones drop. Ball handling has weight and momentum, which kills the frictionless side to side spam that dominated online play, and rhythm shooting offers an alternative to timing a meter that actually rewards feel.

Rebuilding a dribble engine and expanding the ProPLAY animation library inside a fully licensed annual on a twelve month clock is genuinely hard work, and it shows. Off the floor, nothing was learned. MyCareer still starts you at a rating too low to enjoy the sport and then sells the fix, its narrative framing is perfunctory, The City remains a loading screen with a skateboard, and MyTeam wants a subscription's worth of attention. There is an excellent basketball game here that you have to pay past twice.
