NBA 2K23 Review

The Jordan Challenge is the best thing 2K has ever built, and it sits inside a game that still charges you for a haircut.

Visual Concepts spent its effort in the right place. The Jordan Challenge rebuilds fifteen career defining games with era correct broadcast presentation, down to the interlaced scanlines and the arena audio mix, and every objective is drawn from what actually happened on the floor rather than a generic scoring quota. It is a museum piece that also plays well, and the documentary framing gives the mode more narrative weight than any scripted MyCareer script has managed.
The core basketball is the most disciplined it has been in years. Shot timing rewards releasing on a real cue instead of memorizing a bar, the adrenaline boost system caps the endless spam dribbling that ruined online play, and defenders finally get tools to contest without fouling. Then you enter MyCareer, and The City hands you a scooter, a phone full of errands and a currency counter that turns every attribute point into a purchase decision. Grade the sport and this is excellent; grade the whole product and it is merely good.
