NetherRealm has quietly been the only studio treating a fighting game campaign as a real production, and Mortal Kombat 11 is the high point of that work. Kronika's time collapse lets past and present versions of the cast meet, which sounds like an excuse for fan service and instead gives Liu Kang and Kitana actual arcs, performed through facial capture that holds up next to anything in the medium. The fighting underneath slows the series down deliberately. Fatal Blows hand the losing player one comeback swing, Krushing Blows reward specific conditions with a bone snapping camera, and the shortened combo strings push matches toward spacing and whiff punishment rather than the juggle marathons of the previous game.

Then the economy arrives. The Krypt is a loot maze paid for in three separate currencies, the Towers of Time launched with modifiers tuned to be miserable without consumables, and the custom variations players spent hours assembling were locked out of ranked play. Patches walked much of it back. The damage to the goodwill did not fully heal, and that is what the lower grades are measuring.
