Minecraft Review
2011MojangGame
The most influential game of its decade, built on deliberately cheap technology, which is exactly what makes it remarkable.

Nothing else has changed how a generation thinks about games this much for so little technical cost, and the gap between those two facts is the interesting part. Minecraft began as one programmer's Java project with deliberately cheap voxel rendering, and the engineering ambition is genuinely modest next to anything carrying a physically based renderer. What is not modest is the systems design. Procedural terrain, a crafting tree that teaches itself without a tutorial, day-night pressure that forces shelter, and redstone, which is a functioning logic substrate hiding inside a children's building toy.
Survival mode gives the sandbox a spine, so the first night becomes a story every player tells the same way and remembers differently, and that is as close to authored narrative as this game ever gets. The blocky look is a constraint turned into an identity, readable at any distance and immune to aging. Its weaknesses are structural rather than accidental: combat has always been shallow, and the late game is whatever you decide it is.
