The President of the United States pilots a mech against a coup and shouts about freedom, and it was a Japan exclusive for fifteen years.

The premise is the entire pitch and it delivers on it completely. The Vice President stages a coup, so the President climbs into a heavily armed mech and fights his way across American cities while an English voice cast screams lines that sound like they were written from a great distance. It shipped on the original Xbox in Japan only, a console almost nobody there owned, and then spent fifteen years as an expensive import legend before a restored release finally made it playable everywhere.

The game underneath the legend is thinner than the reputation suggests. It is a competent third-person mech shooter with a large weapon loadout, plenty of destructible scenery and mission design that starts repeating itself by the halfway point. The controls are stiff, the camera fights you, and the difficulty spikes in ways that feel arbitrary rather than designed. But the tone is completely sincere in its ridiculousness, never once winking at the audience, and that commitment is why it survived. Worth playing once for the sheer confidence of it, and a reminder that this studio has always been strange.
