Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater Review

A remake with the nerve to change almost nothing, and the craft to make that restraint look easy.

The pitch was always a risk: rebuild a twenty-one-year-old game without rewriting it. Delta keeps the original script, the original performances and the original level geometry, and spends its entire budget on what 2004 hardware could not render, which is the jungle. Foliage now occludes properly, rain beads on face paint, and light falls through the canopy in Bolshaya Past in a way that makes the camouflage menu feel like a real decision instead of a percentage.
The new over-the-shoulder camera is offered alongside the fixed overhead one, so the survival systems that were designed around limited sightlines still work as designed for anyone who wants them to. That restraint is the review. Everything that made Snake Eater the best-written game in its series is untouched, from the Sorrow's river of the dead to the End's sniper duel that a patient player can still end with a clock, and the ladder climbs into its song at exactly the right moment.
What Delta cannot do is surprise anyone who played the original, and its own contribution is presentation rather than design, which is why difficulty-to-make sits a notch below the rest. As preservation it is close to exemplary.
