The suicide mission turns every side quest you skipped into a name on a casualty list, and nothing has matched it since.

BioWare stripped out the parts of the first game everyone hated and accidentally built the best-structured cast in the genre. The suicide mission is the whole design in one sentence: every loyalty quest you finished, every upgrade you bought and every specialist you assign changes who walks off the Collector base alive. That is consequence you feel in a single scene rather than read in a slide of end text. The shooting finally works, with cover, cooldowns and ammo turning the Mako-era slog into a competent third-person tactics game.
Mordin, Thane and Legion each carry a distinct moral problem rather than a backstory dump, and the Normandy hub loop makes visiting them feel like maintaining a real crew. The cost is scope: this is a recruitment drive with a thin central plot, the Collectors barely register as antagonists, and planet scanning is inexcusable padding that the developers never defended. But the finale earns the two games around it, and no space opera has staged a roll call that tense since.
