Two men in their fifties in Hawaii, one of them dying, in a turn based comedy that keeps turning into the saddest thing the series has made.

The combat gets the fix it needed. Turn based battles now let you move within a radius before acting, so positioning, knockback into a group and environmental objects turn a menu into a small tactical puzzle, and the job system has been broadened enough that party building actually matters. Honolulu is the first genuinely new city the series has built in years and it is dense with the nonsense that makes these games work. What lifts it is the Kiryu material.
Giving a character twenty years of history a terminal diagnosis and then a memoir mechanic that walks him through the people he failed is an unusually direct piece of writing for a franchise that mostly communicates through fistfights, and the payoff is earned. Dondoko Island is a full island builder that a lot of players sank twenty hours into by accident. The problems are scale: it is long past the point of discipline, some substories miss badly, and the final act leans on the convoluted conspiracy plotting the series cannot stop reaching for.
