The mod that became a career path, and it still wants a hundred hours from you before it starts making sense.

League of Legends turns a Warcraft III mod into an institution. Two teams, one lane structure, thirty minutes of small decisions about where to stand, and a roster that has grown past a hundred and seventy champions while the map itself barely changes shape. Riot made it free before free was respectable, rotated a handful of champions weekly so a new player always had something fresh to try, and then spent fifteen years treating the balance patch as a form of publishing.
The gameplay grade is for the genre's cleanest implementation, and the difficulty grade covers the part nobody sees, which is keeping that many moving pieces roughly fair while a professional circuit stakes a season on the result. Two things hold the overall where it is. The first is the wall at the front door. Learning the map, the items, the roles and the matchups is a hundred hours of homework before the game begins being the game, and reviewers said so at launch.
The second is the company, since a bad teammate cannot be muted out of a match that still needs five people to finish. The story grade reflects where the writing actually lives, which is everywhere except the client: cinematics, comics, and an animated series that collected more awards than the game ever will.
