Heroes of the Storm Review

2015Blizzard EntertainmentGame

The team fight game that abolished last hitting and item shops, and got punished by the market for being easier to love.

Everything difficult about the genre was deliberately removed. Experience is shared across the team, so no one gets to be twenty minutes ahead of a teammate, there is no gold and no item shop, and talents replace builds. What that leaves is a game entirely about grouping up and fighting over map objectives, which arrive on a timer and genuinely decide matches. It plays fast, matches finish in twenty minutes, and the roster raiding three decades of Blizzard characters is a fan service masterstroke, with each map carrying its own win condition rather than being a reskin of the last.

The cost of that clarity is real: removing the individual economy also removes the space for one player to carry a losing team, so a bad match is decided early and cannot be rescued. That, plus a crowded market and a late arrival, kept the audience small. Blizzard scaled the team back at the end of 2018 and cancelled its professional leagues with almost no warning, which was a poor way to treat the people who had stayed.
