Friendly fire is always on, and that single decision makes it the funniest shooter in years.

Leaving friendly fire permanently enabled is the design decision everything else hangs from. It means the airstrike you called is a threat to your own squad, that reloading a recoilless rifle requires trusting a stranger, and that the game generates its own comedy without writing a line of it. Stratagems are the other stroke: entering a directional code under pressure while a bug patrol closes converts a menu into a dexterity test.

Ragdoll physics and generous explosion scale keep every mission chaotic in a way scripted design cannot fake. The galactic war layer is thinner than it presents, with community progress that is visibly managed rather than emergent, and the mission structure repeats fast once you have seen the objective types. Balance patches through the first year fought the players more than they served them. Presentation is serviceable rather than striking. What it does exceptionally is manufacture stories you retell, which is most of the point.
