The festival finally lands in Japan, and the country almost upstages the cars.

The setting the fanbase spent a decade requesting turns out to be worth the wait. Playground's condensed Japan is the series' most visually dramatic map, neon-wet Tokyo streets giving way to cherry-blossom passes, terraced hillsides, and Hokkaido snow, and the touge-style mountain routes give the driving a rhythmic, technical flavor no previous Horizon map offered. The seasonal system returns with real consequence, autumn maples and winter ice remaking familiar roads, and the 550-plus car list leans pleasingly into Japanese metal, kei cars to Group A legends.

The loop itself is refinement rather than reinvention: festival outposts, showcase spectacles, and an event horizon of checklists that remains compulsively playable and occasionally exhausting. Story stays where Horizon story always is, a relentlessly chipper festival wrapper that exists to unlock the next road, which is why that grade sits low while everything around it soars. The best-looking racing game ever shipped, and it knows it.
