Final Fantasy VII Remake Review

Forty minutes of Midgar stretched into forty hours, and the combat system makes the case for it.

The hybrid battle system is the reason this works. Real-time attacks build ATB segments, ATB segments spend on abilities and spells through a slowed command menu, and stagger rewards you for finding each enemy's specific vulnerability rather than mashing. It gives Cloud, Barret, Tifa and Aerith genuinely different roles and makes party switching mandatory instead of cosmetic. Midgar itself is the other triumph, rendered as a working industrial city with slum markets, plate infrastructure and a class geography the original could only imply.
The padding is real: corridors that exist to fill runtime, a ghost mechanic in Chapter 2 that undersells its own purpose, and side quests that reach for charm and find filler. Background textures in a handful of rooms remain indefensible on the hardware. Where it commits, it commits hard, and the Sector 7 collapse hits with a weight the polygon original never could. An adaptation with an argument.
