Eighteen months, a borrowed engine, and still the best-written RPG of its generation.

New Vegas is the argument that writing and systems design matter more than technology. Built in around eighteen months on Bethesda's aging Gamebryo pipeline, it looks rough, brown, stiff-faced, and prone to crashes, and the C for visuals concedes all of it without apology. Everything else is a masterclass. The four-way struggle for Hoover Dam between the NCR, Caesar's Legion, Mr. House, and an independent Courier is real political writing, not flavor: reputation is tracked per faction, skills open and close dialogue constantly, and a speech build can talk its way through the final battle.
Hardcore mode, ammo crafting, and companion quests with actual arcs give the sim teeth. The DLC quartet, Dead Money through Lonesome Road, forms a connected meta-story more ambitious than most full games. It is the rare RPG where a second playthrough is a genuinely different text. That is what the S is for.
