The best-feeling Fallout to play and the shallowest one to talk to.

Fallout 4 is a game at war with itself, and the fun side wins on points. The moment-to-moment loop is the series' best by a mile: id-consulted gunplay, a layered armor system, legendary drops, and a junk economy that makes every coffee cup a crafting decision. Settlement building turned the wasteland from a museum into a project, and mods have kept that engine running for a decade. The Commonwealth itself is Bethesda's densest map, with Far Harbor later delivering the studio's best questline of the era.

The cost of all this is the role-playing. A voiced protagonist collapsed dialogue into four paraphrased stubs, the main plot's missing-son urgency dissolves the first time you spend forty hours building a beet farm instead, and three of the four factions blur together morally. Story and visuals hold at B, the latter for a dated engine dressed up by excellent art direction. The loop carries it to A regardless.
