The open-world formula rebuilt around curiosity instead of checklists, at a scale no one else has matched.

Elden Ring took the genre everyone else had reduced to icon-clearing and rebuilt it around curiosity. There is no quest log directing you to Caelid's rot wastes or the underground star-fields of Nokron; there is only the horizon, and the confidence that whatever you find there was hand-placed and worth finding. The legacy dungeons, Stormveil and Leyndell above all, are the studio's densest level design ever, and the build system is so generous that two players can finish the game having effectively played different genres.
Torrent makes traversal light, the jump button quietly revolutionizes Souls combat, and the difficulty curve finally bends around player freedom: stuck means go elsewhere, not grind. The Martin-seeded mythology delivers imagery, Radahn's festival and Ranni's questline especially, even if its telling stays oblique. The back third leans on repeated bosses, a real flaw in a hundred-hour game, but no release this decade rearranged the industry's assumptions harder.
