Elden Ring Nightreign Review
2025FromSoftwareGame
A three-player roguelike built from Elden Ring's parts, thrilling in a squad and grinding alone.

The idea is sharp. Take the combat and bestiary of a hundred-hour open world, compress it into a run that lasts about forty minutes, add a storm circle that forces constant movement, and hand three players fixed heroes with their own kits rather than a build. The result is the fastest this studio's combat has ever felt, because there is no time to farm and every decision about which camp to clear is really a decision about whether you will be strong enough for the boss on the third night.
Played with two friends on voice it is genuinely excellent, a compulsive loop of route planning, revival dives and last-second escapes. Played alone it is a different and worse game, because the encounters were balanced around three bodies and the studio's answer to solo scaling took months to arrive. The recycled bosses and reused geometry are exactly as visible as you would expect from a spin-off assembled at speed. It is a real experiment rather than a cash grab, and it works when its conditions are met, which is more than most spin-offs manage.
