Dota 2 Review

2013ValveGame

The deepest competitive game of the decade and the least willing to explain a single thing about itself.

Everything that makes this the most interesting competitive design of its era is also what makes it unplayable for most people who try it. You can deny your own creeps to starve an opponent's experience. Couriers, buybacks, high ground vision and a day and night cycle all shift the value of a fight minute to minute. Every hero has abilities that break a rule the game otherwise enforces, and none of them are locked behind a purchase, so the strategic space is complete from your first match.

The result is a game where a professional series can turn on a single decision about whether to take a shrine, and where the annual tournament built a genuine sporting narrative. It is also brutally unwelcoming. The tutorial does not prepare anyone for the actual game, the item system assumes knowledge nobody has, and the community's reputation for hostility is earned rather than exaggerated. The cosmetics economy is the only monetisation, which is genuinely fair. Getting to the good part takes about two hundred hours.
