Devil May Cry 5 Review
2019CapcomGame
The best pure action game of its generation, and three different games wearing one title.

Capcom brought the character action game back at full strength, and the fundamentals are so clean that the genre's imitators still look clumsy beside it. Three protagonists split the design without diluting it. Nero swaps disposable prosthetic arms that each rewrite his options, so improvisation is forced rather than offered. V fights by proxy, directing a bird, a panther, and a nightmare from outside the danger, which should not work and completely does.
Dante is the full toolbox, four weapons and four styles switchable in the middle of a combo, and mastering him is a hobby rather than a skill. The scoring system is the real teacher here, docking you for repetition and paying for variety, which is why the same fight looks nothing alike in hour two and hour thirty. The RE Engine supplies photoreal faces and the rock solid frame rate that all of this timing depends on. The plot is nonsense delivered with total conviction, and the late corridors reuse their spaces shamelessly. As mechanics, nothing since has topped it.
