A launch showpiece with the sense to rebuild every wall in Boletaria and leave every fight exactly where it was.

The single most consequential change is invisible in screenshots: dying and getting back to the fog gate now takes seconds rather than the better part of a minute, and a game built on repetition is transformed by that alone. Around it Bluepoint rebuilt Boletaria from nothing, and the Tower of Latria in particular is a genuine argument for the hardware, all wet stone and candlelight and cages swinging in the dark. Combat was left alone on purpose.

The poise values, the roll frames, the stamina economy and the deeply strange world tendency system are all still the 2009 versions, which means the balance problems came along too. The Dragon God is still a stealth puzzle wearing a boss health bar, and Maiden Astraea is still a fight the game does not want you to win cleanly. The art direction is the honest point of dispute, since the new armour designs and the fuller orchestral score push toward high fantasy where the original was sour and cheap looking. It is a magnificent object built on a slightly different taste.
