Dead Space (2023 Remake) Review

A remake that keeps the original's silences and rebuilds the Ishimura into one continuous ship you can walk end to end.

The single best decision was removing the chapter breaks. The Ishimura is now one continuous structure with a tram you ride between decks, which means backtracking through a corridor you cleared an hour ago carries real dread because the intensity director will have repopulated it. That system is the other addition worth praising: enemy placement, lighting and audio cues are adjusted against how calm you have been, so the game declines to let you settle.
The dismemberment model was rebuilt so limbs strip layer by layer down to bone, which sounds gratuitous and is actually functional, because you can read exactly how much damage a limb has taken. Giving Isaac a voice risked losing the original's isolation and mostly does not. Against it: the story additions around Nicole and the side missions are competent rather than necessary, and anyone who played the original knows every scare's timing regardless of the reshuffling. Zero gravity flight is a genuine improvement over the hop and stick original.
