Counter-Strike 2 Review

A brilliant engine transplant that shipped with less game than the game it replaced.

Counter-Strike 2 is a technical marvel wearing an incomplete game's clothes. The Source 2 migration produced the two best ideas the series has had in a decade: volumetric smoke grenades that fill space dynamically and can be carved open with bullets and HE grenades, turning a static wall into a playable object, and sub-tick architecture that evaluates actions between server ticks. Lighting and material work quietly modernized maps that were showing their age.

But it launched by deleting things: arms race, danger zone, and community-server features vanished, the map pool shrank, and early hit registration wobbles undermined the sub-tick pitch for months. The F in story is not a joke grade; there is no narrative content of any kind, and unlike a sports title there is no career wrapper either, so the category is simply empty. As the permanent home of the world's deepest competitive shooter, it is safe. As a launch, it cost itself the A.
